Bourque Lake, AB
Bourque Lake, AB54.671540, -110.561996A bright spring day at Bourque. I have heard many stories over the years of the incredible fishing Bourque Lake once held and the shenanigans family members got into going there over the years. Including spending an entire winter trapping at a cabin on the lake in an effort to make money. This winter involved very poor trapping and hunting as well as a little bit of starvation that resulted in my grandfather and a friend eating a frozen deer carcass found in the woods and a really old porcupine shot out of a tree. The two day wagon ride in doesn't compare to the now 30 minute drive from Cold Lake.
Northern Pike at Sapphire Lake, AB
Northern Pike at Sapphire Lake, AB54.694608, -111.038154Sapphire Lake is truly a Gem of a lake. Nestled in the remote Boreal Forest near Wolf Lake. The lake is part of a much larger thrust moraine some call Wolf Mountain. This 'Hill Hole Pairs' was formed during the last glaciation by deep excavation at the front of a glacier, in a process much like a bull dozer digging a hole pushing up a pile of dirt to the South West. Access is very difficult but the lake is very clear and holds a healthy population of 2 to 4 pound pike and some angling sized perch. Locals refer to the lake as Airhole Lake because It is notorious for poor ice formation caused by bubbles coming up from the lake bottom. It is for this reason very few people fish the lake in the winter.

Douglas River, SK
Douglas River, SK58.279735, -109.605697A beautiful remote river in Northern Saskatchewan. Very remote and very unique with Sandstone outcrop and banks. It provided good walleye fishing and a few pike. It is also rumoured to hold Arctic Grayling.
